National: Current Affairs of July 2023

The ULLAS app was launched by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, which aims to revolutionize lifelong learning.

ULLAS, an acronym for “Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society,” is not just an app; it is a transformative tool aimed at bridging the educational gaps in society. Its primary objective is to reach out to over 12 lakh drop-out students and individuals who couldn’t access formal education and bring them back into the learning fold.

The book ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Memories Never Die’ has been released by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The book Authored by Dr. Nazema Maraikayar and Dr. Y.S. Rajan.

Australia and the United States have initiated the Talisman Sabre joint military exercises. Germany joins for the first time, and India, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand will attend as observers, enhancing the regional perspective on the exercises.

HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender, has achieved a significant milestone by entering the $100 billion market-capitalization club as world’s 7th largest lender.

Recently SBI issued Additional Tier-1 (AT-1) bonds. But the issue did not get a good response by the subscribers as only Rs.3,100 crore worth of bonds were subscribed. An Additional Tier-1 (AT-1) bonds are a type of debt instrument issued by bank to raise capital. Tamil Nadu is facing a significant threat to its precious elephant habitats due to the invasive aquatic weed, Ludwigia peruviana. Ludwigia peruviana, an aquatic plant native to South America, has become a menace for Tamil Nadu’s elephant habitats.

Solnhofia parsonsi fossil was discovered in the southeastern region of Germany, in a limestone quarry abundant in fossils dating back to the later stages of the Jurassic period. This quarry has yielded a diverse collection of marine animals and reptiles that lived during that ancient era.

Unlike modern-day marine turtles, Solnhofia parsonsi had shorter and stumpier limbs relative to its body size, indicating that it likely swam in coastal waters rather than the open ocean. This unique limb structure suggests that the turtle was adapted to swim closer to the shore, preferring the network of coastal reefs and lagoons that existed during the Jurassic period.

Recently, a study conducted by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology has shed light on the formation of glacial lakes around Parkachik Glacier in Ladakh, raising important concerns about glacial retreat and its implications.

The Batagaika crater is situated in Russia’s Far East, specifically in the Sakha Republic. This remote region has become a focal point for studying the effects of climate change on permafrost. The expansion of the Batagaika crater can be attributed to the thawing of permafrost, a phenomenon triggered by global warming. As temperatures rise, the once-frozen ground undergoes a process of degradation, leading to the formation of this colossal crater.

India has recently launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) with the aim of conserving seven major big cat species on Earth. Inspired by the success of Project Tiger, which has contributed to India being home to 70% of the world’s tigers, the IBCA will focus on protecting and conserving key big cat species, including Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, and Cheetah.

  • Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched on July 14, 2023, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, using the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3). The GSLV Mark 3 heavy-lift launch vehicle, also known as the Bahubali rocket, supports the moon lander Vikram.
  • To address various challenges due to AI development, an industry-led body named the Frontier Model Forum has been established. Comprised of four industry giants – Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI – the Forum aims to focus on safe AI development, with a particular emphasis on frontier models, which are large-scale machine-learning models with extensive capabilities.
  • Scientists have introduced RoboMapper, a cutting-edge robot designed for material testing.
