India and Singapore have carried out 3-day naval exercise.

  • It was the 28th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX).
  • Initiated in 1994, SIMBEX is the Indian Navy’s longest uninterrupted bilateral maritime exercise with any foreign navy.

A priest cannot be treated as Bhumiswami (owner of land) and the deity is the owner of the land attached to a temple, the Supreme Court has ruled.

  • A Bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and A. S. Bopanna said the ‘pujari’, or priest, only holds the land for the purpose of management of the property of the temple.

India’s services sector expanded in August at the fastest pace in one-and-a-half years amid strong inflows of new work and improved demand conditions.

  • Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose from 45.4 in July to 56.7 in August.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on September 3 said it has imposed a penalty of ₹50 lakh on Bombay Mercantile Co-operative Bank, Mumbai for deficiency in regulatory compliance.

PaisaDukan, a peer-to-peer (P2P) lending marketplace owned by BigWin Infotech Pvt. Ltd., has announced the roll out of last mile lending facilities for women borrowers in tier-2 & tier-3 cities of India.

  • As a pilot project, it has introduced a slew of P2P lending options like grameen loan, small business loans, retirement loans, loans for the disabled, education loan, healthcare loan, pilgrimage loan, home improvement and marriage loans in the Madhubani, Mujhapparpur, Sitamarhi and Darbhanga districts of Bihar.

  • In a major discovery, footprints of three species of dinosaurs have been found in the Thar desert in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, proving the presence of the giant reptiles in the western part of the State, which formed the seashore to the Tethys Ocean during the Mesozoic era.
  • Drug firm Zydus Cadila on September 6 said it has received approval from the U.S. health regulator to market Sitagliptin, a medicine indicated to treat diabetes.
  • The Health Ministers from G20 countries, including India, have united to pledge global action to improve future health security, increase vaccine confidence and tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in a Health Declaration agreed in Rome.
  • Instagram has made it mandatory for all users to enter their date of birth, an attempt to make the platform safe for younger users. Instagram also said it will use artificial intelligence (AI) to crosscheck the birthday information added by users.
  • Rain fell at the highest point on the Greenland ice sheet last week for the first time on record, another worrying sign of warming for the ice sheet already melting at an increasing rate. Water on ice is bad. It makes the ice sheet more prone to surface melt. Not only is water warmer than the usual snow, it is also darker – so it absorbs more sunlight.

Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa launch cenbank digital currency scheme

  • Central banks in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa will conduct a cross border payments trial using different central bank digital currencies (CBDC) to assess if this allows transactions to be settled more cheaply and easily.

China has developed a prototype miniature helicopter for surveillance work on future Mars missions, according to its space science agency, following the historic landing of a robotic rover on the Red Planet a few months ago.

  • The prototype is similar in appearance to the robotic helicopter Ingenuity, developed by NASA for its Perseverance mission this year.
  • China landed a Mars rover in May in its first-ever mission to the planet, becoming the second country after the United States to do so. NASA’s most advanced rover, Perseverance, landed on the planet in February, 2021.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared an economic emergency to contain soaring inflation after a steep fall in the value of the country’s currency caused a spike in food prices.

  • Sri Lanka has received $787 million from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) special drawing rights (SDR) allocation and $150 million from Bangladesh Central Bank as a currency swap arrangement, boosting the island nation’s depleting foreign exchange reserves as it struggles to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Sri Lanka’s economy was struggling before the pandemic struck, laying low a tourism industry that is a vital source of foreign exchange earnings.

Indian teen star Shafali Verma maintained her number one position among women’s T20 batters while New Zealand’s Sophie Devine is the new joint top-ranked all-rounder in the latest ICC rankings issued on September 7.

Jasprit Bumrah on Monday became the quickest Indian fast bowler to take 100 Test wickets, achieving the feat in his 24th game.

  • Bumrah surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev, who had taken 25 Tests to reach the 100-wicket mark in 1980.
  • Irfan Pathan took 28 Tests and Mohammad Shami 29 to get to their 100 Test wickets.
  • Bumrah is now 22nd on the list of highest wicket takers for India in Tests, the list being led by spin legend Anil Kumble (619 wickets).

Senior bureaucrat J.B. Mohapatra has been appointed the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He has been holding the additional charge of CBDT chairman since May 31, after the extended tenure of incumbent P.C. Mody had ended.

The government has appointed Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textile Piyush Goyal as Sherpa for the G20, replacing former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu.

  • The next summit scheduled at the end of October in Rome. While Italy holds the presidency of the G20 formation, India will be holding the presidency from December 1, 2022 and will convene the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2023.
  • India has been a member of the G20 since its inception in 1999.
  • G20 is a major international grouping that brings together 19 of the world’s major economies and the European Union, with its members accounting for more than 80% of global GDP, 75% of trade and 60% of population.
  • Apart from India, the G20 includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, the U.K., the U.S. and the European Union. Spain is invited as a permanent guest.
  • The summit usually includes leaders from a few guest countries and representatives from some of the major international and regional organisations. Ministers of Economy and Finance are traditionally invited to attend the event.

The Bank of England named Huw Pill, a former chief European economist at Goldman Sachs, as its new chief economist, replacing Andy Haldane who stepped down earlier this year.

Aditya Birla Group flagship firm Grasim Industries Ltd has appointed Hari Krishna Agarwal as its Managing Director with effect from December 1, 2021.
